The island of Lombok (Indonesia): General information, weather, seasons, time

General information

Lombok (Lombok) is an island in the Malay archipelago, a group of the lesser Sunda Islands, in the state of Indonesia. Is bounded to the South by the Indian ocean, from the North — Bali sea Pacific ocean. Is at a distance of 35 kilometers from Bali island and separated from it Lambskin Strait. The island's capital – the city of Mataram (Mataram). The island's population — more than 3 million people and an area of 4,725 km2 (Bali for comparison 5,632 km2, slightly more Lombok). The island is almost a perfect oval shape with dimensions of 80 by 70 kilometers. The island is the third highest peak of Idonesia – volcano Rinjani (Rinjani) with a height of 3726 meters.

Lombok is safe to call the younger brother of Bali. Until recently, Bali has been a major transit point from which tourists got on Lombok, often just tour for a few days, while the majority of time spent in Bali.

In October 2011, the island was opened an international airport, and it is now possible to get to Lombok, passing Bali. From Russia there were already made the first direct flights, and if this trend will be in demand, airlines promise to make the flight regular. For travelers, independently studying Asia, it is also possible to get to Lombok from Singapore, Kuala Lumpurand perhaps in the near future route network will be expanded. Read more about this in the section "How to get to Lombok".

The tourist infrastructure on the island is well developed, but far inferior to Bali. In a sense this is a plus: rest, there will be more exotic, wild, intimate and secluded. There are even expressions: "Lobcock is Bali before there came tourists" or "unspoiled Bali".

Tourists are really much smaller than it happens on "big brother Bali". The rest is much quieter, and the surrounding small Islands, you can be all alone the master of your island or beach in a cozy Bungalow on the beach. Until now the island has a village in which live nation does not speak is not something that is in English, but even in Indonesian language.

Near Lombok are the Gili Islands – three small Islands, where to go for more a peaceful and relaxing holiday.

Another interesting feature of Lombok between Bali and Lombok runs the southern tip of the Wallace line, dividing much of the natural world on two Islands. While Bali is inherent in the Asian fauna, while on Lombok is already Australian. The Australian fauna includes birds of Paradise and these types of birds like the Blackbird with an orange rim, who live on Lombok, and absolutely not meet in Bali. While in the Asian group in Bali, you can find monkeys and tigers (of course, tigers on Bali has long been destroyed, but they were there before).

If you have a choice of where to go, Bali or Lombok, just think what you more important and interesting: the silence, the peace and tranquility of Lombok, or fussiness, noise and festivity Bali. While it's fair to say that in Bali there are very quiet and peaceful place, where almost no tourists. Well, it is best to spend time on both Islands, especially to get from one to the other will not be easy.

Religion in Lombok

Unlike Bali, where the main religions is Hinduism and Buddhism, the main religion of Lombok is Muslim (just like in the rest of Indonesia, although generally in milder form). A small number of Christians – both Protestant and Catholics. In some areas, preserved native cult "sasak Boda" combining animistic basis with elements of Hinduism.

In the Northern part of the island is extended more soft Islam, the so-called "Islam wektu body" (literally — three times a day Islam), which is freely interpret the Orthodox religious canons, considering, in particular, sufficient do not pray five times a day, but three. Anyway, the main religion is still Islam, and should take into account its characteristics and traditions and to treat them with due respect. About traditional rules of conduct, read the section on security in Indonesia. Don't forget about time of the month of Ramadan.

Weather, seasons, the climate in Bali

The climate of Lombok is tropical, Equatorial, warm all year round. Tourist season in Lombok is year-round. Peak tourist season is between may to August.

Despite its proximity to Bali, the period of the rainy season on the Islands is different, and on Lombok it lasts from October to April, not December to March as in Bali. Humidity on Lombok is slightly smaller rains rarely go more than one hour.

Current weather in Lombok (Mataram) and the forecast for the near future:

Helpful information

Alcoholic beverages. Despite the fact that Lombok is a Muslim island alcohol drinks here are sold at reasonable prices.

Shopping. Bargain on Lombok you can, but the bargain is not on the same scale as in Bali. Often there are fixed prices, and cheaper Bali.

The rate of exchange. The exchange rate is slightly lower than in Bali, so it makes sense to find the best rate to change money in Bali (not at the airport).

Assessing the scale of the disaster, and to be more precise, the size of the island, I realized that it is easier to live in different places for a few days, than each time to spend half a day on the road to dobirat where necessary. The solution was not quite correct because worn out to pack your bags every 4 days. But it was possible to identify the optimal place to stay.
All the same, the area Seminyak the most comfortable. But it is better he stays not in Seminyak, but a little above it, that is. There is chudestny village with very affordable housing and to Seminyak's doorstep, no more than 7 minutes on the bike. The biggest plus that this location allows partly to avoid the Balinese traffic jams during rush hour and saves a lot of time on the road, in whatever direction you are moving. And the place is calm, there are inexpensive, non-touristy, restaurants. Shops with nice local not tourist prices. And, of course, the district of Seminyak and Kuta are close enough that it was absolutely not boring neither day nor night. And Jimbaran is not something that would be right so far with location. 30-40 minutes maybe.
The truth is this location is suitable only for those who have already settled in Asia and is not afraid to ride a bike.

But if more and Northern part of the island you want to visit - it is necessary for a few days to stay in Ubud. All the same, road to Bali because of the traffic and exhaust fumes of hell. It is better to optimize the logistics and less time to spend on the road. ...
